‘Lively and dramatic’ music at Peterborough Cathedral this Saturday

Monday 13 March

Lively and dramatic music by the composers Haydn, Bach and Tippett will be performed at Peterborough Cathedral this Saturday, 18th March.

The Cathedral Choir, Youth Choir and Festival Chorus, with Peterborough Choral Society, will welcome the newly formed Peterborough Festival Orchestra for a spring concert.

Tansy Castledine, the Cathedral’s Director of Music who is conducting the concert, introduces the programme saying:

“Haydn’s Missa in Angustiis (Mass in a Time of Anxiety) is now often referred to as the Lord Nelson Mass. It paints a vivid picture of the political and military turmoil of the Napoleonic wars in a dramatic setting of the mass text. There are trumpets and timpani, busy string writing, and energetic dotted rhythms.

“Bach’s Magnificat is equally dramatic in its telling of the story of Mary, Jesus’ mother, through bold choruses, highly decorated solo instrumental and vocal lines, and intricate polyphony to bring the text alive.

“In between these two works, Michael Tippett’s Five Spirituals from his secular oratorio, A Child of our Time, will be sung unaccompanied by the choirs, providing a contrasting range of choral textures as well as rich harmonies expressing a full range of emotions. It concludes with a glimpse of a 'land where all is peace'."

Soprano, Sophie EdwardsAlongside solos sung by the Lay Clerks of the Cathedral Choir, the guest soloist will be Sophie Edwards, soprano. Sophie graduated from Royal Holloway, University of London in 2015, where she sang as a choral scholar in the University's esteemed Chapel Choir. She is a former member of Genesis Sixteen, The Sixteen’s young artists’ programme and recent notable engagements include Monteverdi Vespers with The Sixteen & Harry Christophers.
