A Royal Celebration at Peterborough Cathedral

Friday 21 April

Join us for a fun-filled weekend to celebrate the Coronation from Saturday 6th May.

Peterborough Cathedral, in collaboration with Peterborough City Council, will host a fun-filled weekend of celebrations and community events to mark the Coronation of The King and The Queen Consort.

On Saturday 6th May, celebrations will commence at 10.00am with a live-streaming of BBC footage on big screens inside and outside the Cathedral. The event is free and all are welcome, so gather the family together to witness this momentous and historical event in a truly unforgettable setting. The screenings will continue until around 2.00pm and you can drop in as you are able.

At around 1.00pm the Cathedral bells will ring out and there will be a community parade setting off from the Cathedral to the Guildhall on Cathedral Square, followed by a world food picnic where you can relax on the Cathedral Green. Bring a blanket to sit on and your own food or why not try something new from one of the food trucks located nearby.

In a spectacular finale, join with Peterborough’s vibrant creative community as they perform a Coronation Concert at the Cathedral at 4.00pm. With performances from Gabriella (classical crossover singer), Tu Danse, Lucy’s Pop Choir, Peterborough Community Gospel Choir, Scott Coe and The East Timor Dance Group, this event is the perfect end to a remarkable day. Concert tickets are £3 each and can be purchased via Ticket Source here www.ticketsource.co.uk/Peterborough-Cathedral-Events/t-ojmpxxx

The Cathedral Choir will be part of a special service of Choral Evensong on Sunday 7th May at 3.30pm, attended by civic dignitaries. All are welcome and there is no need to book. Donations are invited.

You can find out more about Peterborough’s royal connections on a Royal Connections tour of the Cathedral. Throughout the centuries, Peterborough has hosted many royal visitors and been affected by the machinations of monarchs. The burial place of two queens, it was a significant power in the medieval period and beyond. This tour will explore the link between Peterborough Abbey with those who ruled. Tours will take place on Friday 5th May at 2.00pm and Monday 8th May at 11.00am and 2.00pm. The Very Revd Chris Dalliston, Dean of Peterborough, said:

“Whether you are new to Peterborough or have lived here for years, you are invited to come and enjoy this historic moment together, in the beautiful setting of your Cathedral. The live stream from Westminster Abbey is a marvellous opportunity for us to be part of that service, joining in prayers for King Charles and Queen Camilla. Our own Choral Evensong on the Sunday will also be filled with beautiful music and we’ll remember before God the life of service to which our King has been called. Do come and join us if you can.”

Peterborough City Council has received grants for Coronation events from The National Lottery Community Fund, DCMS and The UK Government.
