Outdoor comedy to be staged in the Cloisters, 21st August 2020

Thursday 30 July

The beautiful outdoor space on the south side of Peterborough Cathedral will be the setting for a ‘socially distanced’ performance of Oscar Wilde’s famous comedy, The Importance of Being Earnest, on Friday 21st August.

The show will be presented by DOT Productions as part of a short summer tour.

Described by Oscar Wilde as "a trivial comedy for serious people", the witty dialogue and fabulous characters of The Importance of Being Earnest are sure to delight serious and flippant audiences alike. With unforgettable roles like the formidable Lady Bracknell, and the charming but frivolous Algernon Moncrieff, this promises to be a truly entertaining evening.

DOT Productions’ producer, Andrew Lindfield, had this so say about the company’s return:

“We are so excited to be able to get back on stage after such a crazy few months! After having to cancel our planned tour of Jane Eyre, we didn’t know how long it would be before productions would be allowed again. Returning to such a wonderful venue like Peterborough Cathedral Cloisters was beyond our expectations for 2020, but our socially distanced rehearsals are all planned and we can’t wait to get going to perform in this ‘new normal’ world!”

The Cathedral Cloisters will be marked out so that the audience can sit in their households or ‘bubbles’, suitably distanced from others. Ticket holders are invited to bring a rug, cushions or a deckchair to sit on and they are also advised to check the weather forecast and dress accordingly.

The show begins at 7.30pm, and the doors will open at 6.30pm so that people can arrive gradually and avoid queuing. Pre-ordered drinks will be on sale in the interval and the performance will go ahead outdoors, whatever the weather.

Great care has been taken to organise the performance in such a way that the risk from COVID-19 is kept to a minimum. You can see a note of the measures in place on the ticket website.

Tickets are £12 per person and are more details are available here:  https://www.peterborough-cathedral.org.uk/143/section.aspx/142/earnest
