A long time ago, there lived dinosaurs...

Monday 9 March

Have a look at this lovely story from five-year-old Victoria Elizabeth Afrooznia, written for a 500 word short story competition at her school. It concerns dinosaurs coming to a certain Cathedral this summer.

A long time ago, there lived dinosaurs. Some were fierce and dangerous, and other dinosaurs were gentle, but T. rex was the strongest of all.

One day, all of the dinosaurs died because there was a fire stone which bashed into the Earth with a huge power, and all of the dinosaurs died.

Millions of years later, people began to be born. And all the people were happy. But the happiest person of all was a girl called Victoria. She was five years old, she was pretty and kind, and one of the places she loved visiting the most was the Natural History Museum. It was a magical place, in London, and lots of people from all over the world queued in a very long line in order to get there.

The first time Victoria entered inside, she saw fossils, dinosaur bones and a nest made of straw with little dinosaurs hatching from their eggs. She got very scared when she saw an enormous moving T. rex. She did not want to go near it! But the dinosaur gently moved his head and looked around when he spotted Victoria being scared. He told her not to be scared – he said he roared because he wanted to say something, but she did not understand dinosaur language. He was very excited to tell her that he was soon going to visit Peterborough Cathedral but he was very anxious of the place because he had never been anywhere else before and he did not know what to expect. Victoria responded, “It is okay, because our Cathedral is a nice church. People there are kind and will look after you well! Canon Tim’s dog, Lexy, can become your friend (you are lucky you do not have bones, so she will not eat you)!” She also said, ‘I love dinosaurs and even though I did not expect you to eat me, I did not think you were so friendly.”

The dinosaur asked Victoria if she could invite all her friends, including from her school, to visit him during his summer holiday stay in the Cathedral – to have some fun and to become the dinosaur’s best friends! The dinosaur added, “Remember not to feed me because I am a robot, but feel free to put some pennies into a small white envelope to donate during your visit”.

It was so lovely to meet and talk to the T. rex, but unfortunately it was time to go. Victoria said, “Bye for now, I miss you already. See you again in Peterborough,” and she blew a kiss, as big as the Earth.
