Helping the homeless who are isolating

The Cathedral community has been asked to help with the resourcing and feeding of 20 (at present) rough sleepers who have been placed in temporary accommodation for self-isolation but who have no basics and no support network to help them get those basics.

The request is that we find a way to assemble first a starter pack for each newly confined person and then a weekly food drop. Light Project Peterborough will deliver to the two locations without entering the building and residents will distribute within the area of isolation.

We propose to assemble the packs in the Cathedral itself and would request that any donations should if possible be brought there. We may need to review this as COVID-19 restrictions tighten.

It is hoped that we can get packs together by Monday for starting delivery. What we need in order to do that is as follows:

  • (One of each starter item for each person) wine box sized cardboard boxes with  cups/mugs, glasses, cereal bowls, plates, knives, forks, spoons, teaspoons, tin openers, saucepans, frying pans, kitchen cloths or wipes, soap, shower gel, loo roll, toothbrushes, toothpaste, washing up liquid.

Then food wise the essentials are as follows:

  • Biscuits

  • Sliced bread

  • Cereals

  • Porridge

  • Chocolate bars

  • Squash

  • Long life milk

  • Pasta

  • Pot noodles

  • Soups

  • Sugar

  • Teabags

  • Baked beans, tinned hotdogs, savories, custard, rice pudding, fruit etc Microwave meals Fresh fruit.

Sadly this is in addition to what the community already gives to The Food Bank and we will seek to maintain that work as well as we can. Any surplus from this project will be either carried over week by week or given to the food bank.

Please could you let this be known on your networks. If you or others are willing to help but cannot get to the Cathedral please be in touch and we will see if local churches and business might be willing to help as drop off points.

These are challenging times but in the love of Christ and the power of The Holy Spirit we will continue to do what we can for those in need with minimum contact, at a distance and with whatever we have to offer.
