Children & Young People

Young people and children contribute a great deal to our community and congregation at the Cathedral. We seek to encourage them to join us and explore the Christian Faith in ways that are directly relevant for them.

Parents who are part of the worshipping community at Peterborough Cathedral, and who are on the Cathedral Roll, may ask for their children to be baptised at the Cathedral. Arrangements can be made and preparation offered to suit each family.

Receiving Communion before Confirmation

Children in Year 3 or above, whose parents are part of the worshipping community at the Cathedral, and who are on the Cathedral Roll, may receive Holy Communion before they have been Confirmed. This must be agreed with the Canon Missioner, who runs a short course each Lent leading up to Easter.

Children in Year 7 or above are eligible for Confirmation after a course of preparation, which is run each year leading up to Easter. This provides an opportunity for the young people to learn about and explore their faith before deciding whether they wish to be confirmed.

Sunday and Holiday Groups for Children & Young People

During term-time there are normally two groups for children which meet during the first part of the 10.30am Sunday Eucharist service. The groups are:
• The Explorers – (Ages 5-7) who meet in the Sacristy in the South Transept. Contact: Mike & Gill Graham.
• The Adventurers – (Ages 7 upwards) who meet in the Becket Chapel. Contact: Beki Sellick.

Groups are led by a minimum of two authorised adults. We use published resources linked to the Bible readings for the day, and we aim to have fun together as we learn.

Children process out of the Cathedral during the first hymn with their leaders and gather in the South Transept (Explorers) or West Door (Adventurers) before leaving the building. The leaders aim to return them during the Peace.

Groups meet during term-time except on the first Sunday of half term. During school holidays there is usually a single children’s group for all ages, offering less formal input.

Children are always welcome to participate in the Cathedral Eucharist.  On Christmas Day, Mothering Sunday and Harvest they can also help in the leading of the liturgy and on those days there are no separate Children’s Groups.

Soft toys and books for babies and toddlers can be found in St. Kyneburgha’s chapel (next to the South Transept door). There are nappy changing facilities in the lavatories next to the Education Centre.
