Vespers, Candlelight & Compline

Cathedral
Friday 28 January 2022 17:30 - 21:00

This contemplative evening in the Cathedral offers a wonderful way to unwind, Tudor-style, at the end of a busy week.

You can just come for one of the services, or just for a while to the drop-in evening, or stay all the time. We do ask that those attending Vespers or Compline arrive in good time and remain seated during the service.

No booking is required. Donations are invited at the Cathedral.

5.30pm, Vespers

Worship in a form that would have been familiar in Tudor times, sung by the Cathedral Choir.

The service will last around 40 mins.

6.30pm, Cathedral Open Evening

Following Vespers the Cathedral will remain open for visitors to take time to enjoy the special atmosphere of the building at night.

Candles will be lit and there will be background music to listen to. It is a great opportunity to take photos or simply to sit quietly. You can stay as long or short a time as you wish.

The Open Evening ends at 8.30pm, when visitors are invited to take a seat ready to hear Compline sung.

9pm, Compline

A service at the close of the day, sung by the lay clerks (adult singers) of the Cathedral Choir. Like Vespers, Compline would have been part of the daily Divine Office observed by the monks of Peterborough Abbey.

The service will last around 40 mins.
