Peterborough Cathedral - a centre of Christian worship
Consider the great cross formed by the building of the Cathedral church: it tells of the love that God makes known to us in Jesus.
Even though Jesus was born over 2000 years ago, his message of forgiveness, hope and love is as relevant today as ever. Jesus said that God is our loving and merciful father and that we are his precious and beloved children. He said that we should treat each other with love, respect and forgiveness. He lived out this message through his own life of caring, teaching and healing.
He challenged the moral, religious and political views of his day. He was condemned to a criminal's death, but even saw this as God's appointed way of bringing people back to Him. "The Son of Man" he said (referring to himself) "did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many."
After three days God raised Jesus from the dead and his frightened and defeated followers became fearless and joyful messengers of this good news of God's love. Turned around by the resurrection of Jesus and the gift of his Holy Spirit, they took God's message of hope across the world.
This message of the good news about Jesus is the direct reason why this Cathedral exists. It is the reason why all over the world today there are Christians who share the experience of meeting the living Jesus and who believe that he alone has the key to human life.
