What sort of year have you had? Some of us could say very quickly, ‘a good year’ or ‘a bad year’. Some might want to say, ‘a busy year’ or ‘an empty year’. For most of us ‘a mixed year’ would probably cover it.

Volunteering & Guiding

Volunteering

The day to day operation of the Cathedral is supported by a large and committed volunteer team which mans the Souvenir Kiosk, helps out at events and generally performs a number of tasks that keeps the Cathedral open 364 days a year.

We are always grateful for any support offered by members of the congregation or supporters of the Cathedral to assist with a wide variety of tasks.

If you are able to give your time either occasionally or on a permanent basis please contact:

  • Volunteering at the Cathedral West Front (Welcome, retail or refreshment offering) : David Barnes – 01733 355315
  • Volunteering in the cathedral: Canon Missioner Jonathan Baker – 01733 355315
  • Volunteering as a Guide: Linda Dowell – 01733 355315

Guiding

As well as our volunteers we have a number of Cathedral guides who lead Cathedral tours. The Education and Visitors Office welcomes enquiries from anyone who is interested in joining the guiding team for our organised tours.

It is not necessary to be a member of the Cathedral congregation or even a regular church goer, but we do expect guides to be in sympathy with the mission of the Cathedral and to present the faith and worship of the Cathedral in a positive light.

Training to become a guide normally takes place in the autumn and winter with a 12-week course beginning in September or October. There is a written test at the end of the course and you will be expected to do further training with an existing guide before leading your own tours.

If you would like to guide school groups you will need to undergo a basic CRB check. For further information on becoming a guide contact Linda Dowell on 01733 355315.
