Cathedral Tours

Visiting the Cathedral for a historic tour could not be easier, as the Cathedral is open to the public 364 days a year. Each visitor is greeted by a welcomer and is given the opportunity to explore the ‘Story of the Abbey’ exhibition and learn more about the Cathedral as they look around using our interactive screens and literature. If you wish to bring a group to the Cathedral for a guided Cathedral Tour, this can be arranged for a small fee.

There are two options for historic Cathedral tours.  For individuals or family groups there are ad hoc tours, which take place almost every day from April to September at 2pm, except on Wednesday’s when they are at 11.30am, and on Sundays, when there are no ad hoc tours available. Larger groups can book their own tour which can be arranged at a time to suit you, including evenings. Both types of tours are priced at £4 per person (£3 concessions) and are led by qualified and highly knowledgeable Cathedral guides. The main difference between the two is that visitors do not have to book for our regular ad hoc tours but can simply join the group on the day by paying at the Welcome Desk.
During the winter months (October to March) ad hoc tours are less frequent and it is advisable to ring in advance (01733 355300) to check on availability

For group visits, refreshments ranging from coffee or tea to a buffet lunch can be arranged.  Our coffee shop is quite small and cannot cater for a whole group suddenly arriving without prior warning.

Alternatively, groups may bring their own guide but the same price applies for groups who take this option as for those who require a Cathedral guide. In all cases it is the responsibility of the group leader to make the payment at the Welcome Desk.

The generic Cathedral tour – either ad hoc or private - lasts roughly 1hr to 1hr 15 minutes and provides a fascinating insight into the History the building, the key points of religious, architectural and historical interest, as well as accounts of the many stories and legends associated with the Cathedral and an insight into the continuing use of the building today

Ad hoc tours tend to be more suited to individuals or small groups and usually consist of between  2-10 people whereas larger groups will need to pre-book a private guided tour. We can accommodate larger groups but these must be pre-arranged with our Education and Visitors Officer Andrew Watson, by calling 01733 355300 or e-mailing andrew.watson@peterborough-cathedral.org.uk.
