The Company of St. Peter - Our Projects

The Company of St. Peter is the main fundraising initiative for Peterborough Cathedral, established in 2001.

It was established by The Peterborough Cathedral Development and Preservation Trust and has raised over £2,383,000 to support the ministry, fabric and music of this great Cathedral Church since it began almost 8 years ago.

In 1996, prior to the launch of The Company of St. Peter, The Peterborough Cathedral Trust raised a magnificent £7.3 million to carry out essential repairs to the fabric of the Cathedral. Through the determination and drive of the then Trust Chairman, the late Sir Stephen Hastings, and his team the required sum was raised by the end of 2000.

Projects included the restoration of the Nave Ceiling, some replacement of the Tesserae Pavement and a number of other important repairs in and around the Cathedral and its Precincts. A refreshment facility, bookshop, and visitors centre was created and the much needed refurbishment of the flats in the Western Range was undertaken. A Music Endowment Fund was established to help secure the future of the Cathedral’s music for generation to come.

Despite these amazing achievements, at the end of the appeal a study was carried out to ascertain the extent of funding required in the longer term. It was decided that to raise the money necessary we would need professional assistance.

So in 2001, Compton International Fundraising were enlisted and they came up with a proposal to form an organisation called The Company of St Peter, which would enable those who wished to give their financial support to do so on an annual basis.

By encouraging annual contributions from loyal and generous Cathedral supporters to a membership scheme, we are able to manage our fundraising for the various projects planned. In return membership provides special benefits including an exclusive programme of events, special invitations to Cathedral events and participation in the ecclesiastical and other functions of the Church.

This initiative has proved enormously successful and to date we have in the region of 150 members. Since the foundation of The Company of St. Peter the generosity of its contributors has made it possible to invest over £2 million in the work of Peterborough Cathedral.

Examples of the diversity of this support include:

Fabric Ministry Music
New chairs for the Cathedral Contribution to salary of a youth officer Support for Choir tours
Refurbishment of clergy residences Contribution to salary of Education Officer Individual voice training for Choristers
Conservation of wall paintings New orders of service for Evensong Choristers Bursaries
Repairs to ancient walls Interactive screens for visitors Extensive provision of new music
Replacement of lighting system Funding for Cathedral Open Day 50% funding of Lay Clerk salaries

And not of course forgetting very significant gifts to the continuing restoration of the West Front.

The Company of St. Peter celebrated their Seven Years of Success last year with a Thanksgiving Service and a Barbeque for all our members. They were presented with commemorative brochures and specially designed anniversary badges to acknowledge their valuable support.

Despite our success, we are always grateful for new members and urge support from as many as possible to not only provide financial security for this magnificent building and its long rich heritage but also to promote a wide interest in all its activities. To become a member please download the application form and return it to the Cathedral using the details to be found on the form.
