Runners brave the cold for Cathedral Pancake Race

Wednesday 1 March

A small but enthusiastic band of runners and spectators braved the cold weather on Shrove Tuesday to take part in the Peterborough Cathedral Pancake Race.

Equipped with pancakes freshly prepared by The Fenland Roaster, the race was started by The Deputy Mayoress, Christine Wilson. The runners included the Deputy Mayor, Councillor Keith Sharp, as well as contenders from the arts organisation Metal Peterborough and Vivacity Culture and Leisure, and two Cathedral Canons wearing cassocks.

Setting off at a cracking pace, the runners followed the route around the east end of the building and back through the Cloisters. Some slowed their pace until the home straight, but not Sarah Haythornthwaite and Kevin Tighe who were declared the winners.

The race provided much good humour and laughter especially when watching back the video footage of Canons Jonathan Baker and Ian Black, ceremonially led by the Head Verger David Wood (scroll down to view). Well done and thank you to all concerned.

Many thanks to Paul Marriott for the photo.
