Marriage Reaffirmation

In February 2009, the Cathedral hosted its first Marriage Reaffirmation Service to support National Marriage Week UK, which saw around 150 people renewing their marriage vows on none other that St. Valentine’s Day.

The ecumenical service included three of the most popular wedding hymns and the reaffirmation of marriage vows, as well as prayers for continued commitment, which were followed by light refreshments including heart shaped cookies and pink champagne to celebrate the day.

With such an excellent response to the service this year, there are plans to hold the service again in February 2010.

Reflecting on this service the Dean of Peterborough, The Very Reverend Charles Taylor, says: ‘Marriage or Holy Matrimony is one of God’s great gifts to humanity. It is a symbol and sacrament of both the relationship between God and his people and also of the sanctity of human love. Last year my wife and I celebrated our Silver Wedding Anniversary, and every one of those twenty-five years has been worth it!’

‘As Valentine’s Day continues to become all the more commercial year on year, we felt it important to offer a more spiritual reflection on the sanctity of marriage by inviting married couples, who so wish, to reaffirm their promises, to receive God’s blessing, and to pray together for the support of his grace in the days and years ahead.’
