leaving gift in your will

Leave a gift in your will

Most of us will want the members of our family to benefit from what we leave behind when we are gone, but in addition to our family, some of us may wish to leave something extra for a special place, a special person, charity or organisation which has meant or given much to us over the course of our life.

If Peterborough Cathedral is a special place for you, then a legacy will help towards sustaining the life and heritage at Peterborough Cathedral, helping to safeguard the fabric, music and ministry of Peterborough’s great Cathedral Church for generations to come.

Making your will

Making your will is the only way you can be quite sure that your money, personal possessions and property will be distributed in the way that you wish. It is generally best to consult a solicitor in making a will, as your solicitor will be able to advise you about taxation and other matters including how it might affect your estate. All gifts to a charity are presently exempt from Inheritance Tax. Thus, a legacy of (say) £10,000 to Peterborough Cathedral from an estate bearing tax will only cost the estate £6,000. If you have already made your will but decide you wish to leave a legacy, your solicitor can add a new legacy quite simply by means of a codicil.

What kind of legacy?

Your legacy could take a number of forms such as a specified sum of money, a specified item, or perhaps a proportion of the residue of your estate. Your solicitor would advise you on this and a suitable form of wording in your will but anyone wishing to discuss this with a representative from the Cathedral first is asked to please contact Anna Shaw or Richard Cattle on 01733 355315 or email trust@peterborough-cathedral.org.uk.

Wording in the will

If you wish to leave a gift in your will, please specify The Company of St Peter, The Cathedral Office, Minster Precincts, Peterborough, PE1 1XS,as the beneficiary. The Company of St Peter is a registered charity (No. 1051346) and is dedicated to supporting the development and preservation of Peterborough Cathedral, its heritage and mission in the Diocese and beyond.

Registration We would be extremely grateful if you do decide to make a legacy to Peterborough Cathedral, and it would be of great help if you could let us know once this has been done. We will then keep in touch with you from time to time regarding what is happening at the Cathedral, and our Legacy Officer Tony Williams is always on hand to help and advise on all aspects of making a gift to the Cathedral in this way.
