As one of the top 10 landmarks in the UK, as voted by Fuijfilm users in a 2007 poll, Peterborough Cathedral is the perfect choice for an educational visit, both for schools and adult visitors alike, as it is steeped in rich heritage and has a fascinating history, not to mention stunning grounds abundant in an array of wildlife and opportunities for learning in their plenty.
As the burial place of two former Queens – Katharine of Aragon and Mary Queen of Scots (the latter’s remains now rest at Westminster Abbey), the Cathedral offers much more than superb architecture and a beautiful sacred space. It is an opportunity to discover the many interesting legends and stories associated with its past, providing the perfect backdrop for a cultural, academic or educational trip to learn more about this fascinating place.
The Cathedral is hugely popular with schools, making special provision for school children and offering programmes in line with the National Curriculum. By far the most popular offering for schools are our themed Tudor Days and Cathedral Roadshows, which take place every year.
We have an onsite Education Centre and schools are welcome to come for anything from a short visit to a whole day including tour, activities and use of the Education Centre as a base and for lunch.
Alternatively, if your group cant make it to the Cathedral, why not let the Cathedral come to you? We now offer a Cathedral Roadshow that brings the Cathedral to your school, business, club or group incorporating a slide show and talk, models, costumes, pictures, artifacts and relevant group activities.
However, it is not just school groups which can benefit from the education and learning offered on site. We also have a bountiful Cathedral library stocked with religious texts, archives relating to the Cathedral and also local historical records, available to the public for research/academic projects.
In addition, we have an excellent array of beautiful conferencing rooms for externally run training, workshops, meetings and interviews and we also run a number of religious courses on site as well.
The rest of this section explains in full detail the main offering to schools and to the public with regards academic and religious learning available within the Cathedral grounds.
