As such a wonderful storehouse of historical, archeological and religious points of interest, the Cathedral regularly holds a number of events that are by way of their very nature, educational and cultural. Hosting a range of events that encourages continued learning allows visitors to discover both something of the building as an ancient sacred space and also of the Christian Faith and the way that we share our religion as a working church.
We host an Open Day every year that encourages visitors of all ages to learn more about the Cathedral. Our main educational events for children, include our Tudor Days held in July and our guided school tours that take place throughout the year allowing school parties to discover this great Cathedral church.
For adults our key educational events are those mainly organised by the Cathedral’s various groups and associations such as the Reading Group and Film Society or the Peterborough Theological Society.
In addition to this however, we do often welcome outside parties into the Cathedral to arrange exhibitions that have a historic, artistic, musical or cultural nature to them that can provoke thought and provide additional opportunity to learn.
An example of an activity such as this in recent months has been The Ridley Mission Group who constructed a Peter’s Journey exhibition to encourage visitors to follow the journey of one of our 3 patron saints. We also host a Prisons Exhibition in November which gives a real insight into life in prison and how prisoners are rehabilitated back into the community. We also recently welcomed the Lyre of Ur exhibition displaying a replica of the oldest string instrument ever found and there are more in the pipeline for the coming months.
