Precincts Tours

These occasional outdoor tours in the summer months look at the historic buildings in the Precincts and visit the rarely open Deanery Garden, site of an 11th century mott and bailey fortress. 2017 dates now available!

What do you see? Peterborough Deanery Garden from Tout Hill

The Precincts tour starts outside the West Front and tells the history of the Becket Chapel, the Norman Arch leading to Cathedral Square with King’s Lodging above it, and the Knights’ Chamber. The guide will also talk about the 18th century Western Range and the neighbouring row of 19th century town houses built by J.L. Pearson, the architect who restored the Cathedral Tower, Quire, Presbytery, and High Altar.

After that the tour will move to Robert Kirkton’s Arch leading into the Deanery area, and from there up the north side of the Cathedral showing the former site of the Lady Chapel. Then it will enter the Victorian Deanery Garden and take a look at Tout Hill, the site of the 11th century castle. The tour then goes around to the east side of the Cathedral to see the exterior of the New Building, before looking at the remains of Infirmerer’s Hall. The group will visit Almoner’s Hall and return to the West Front via the site of the former monastic Refectory, Dormitory and Chapter House. En route the tour will see Laurel Court and the Cloisters.

Throughout the tour the guide will tell the story of these remarkable buildings, many of which which have stood on this site for centuries.
