Baptisms, Weddings & Funerals

In the Church of England baptisms, weddings and funerals normally take place at the local parish church rather than the Cathedral, although in some circumstances it is appropriate for the Cathedral to offer this ministry.

Those eligible to be married in the Cathedral include:

  • regular worshippers at the Cathedral, over at least a six month period, who are also on the Cathedral Roll

  • those who have a genuine pastoral connection with the Cathedral, such as members of staff and their children, former members of staff of longstanding service, former choristers and other members of the Cathedral Foundation, including former Head Pupils of The King’s (Cathedral) School

  • those who live within the Cathedral Precincts.

With the exception of those living in the Cathedral Precincts, where banns are called, it is always necessary to apply for an Archbishop's Special Licence to marry in the Cathedral.

The cost of marrying in the Cathedral varies, ranging from a simple small-scale service, to a big wedding in the nave with organist, choir and bellringers, plus various other options in between.

The Cathedral is also able to host wedding receptions in a number of historic locations in the Precincts, with high quality catering. For more information contact
