Fundraising & Financial support

Peterborough Cathedral has charitable status and does not receive any funding from the state to remain in operation 364 days a year. The day to day operation of the Cathedral costs in the region of £3,500 without taking into account essential restoration and maintenance projects that must also be funded to preserve this great icon for generations to come. We are heavily supported in our financial aims by the Peterborough Cathedral Development and Preservation Trust but we also must rely on a number of different fundraising intiaitives to help bridge the funding gap for general operation but also essential maintenance and development projects to protect and expand our operation in the years to come.

From 2007-2009, the main area of focus for our essential fundraising was the restoration and conservation of the Cathedral’s West Front - known as The West Front Project - which has cost in the region of £600,000. Despite completing The West Front Project on time and to budget in December 2009, we are now dealing with a new challenge presented by climate change - this time on the Cathedral roof! For more information about or ‘Save the Ceiling’ project to prevent rainwater overflow damaging our unique 13th century hand-painted Nave ceiling.

Aside from large scale fabric conservation works to repair the damage caused to the building by climate change and atmospheric pollution, maintaining our long standing choral tradition is also a costly ambition for the Cathedral and our basic ministry and mission across the Diocese and beyond accounts for 65% of our overall available spend.

As such we rely heavily upon the generosity of our visitors, fundraising bodies and Cathedral Benefactors to help us generate the income required to complete our work. There are various options available for those who wish to help us financially from leaving memorial gestures or a gift in your will to becoming a Custodian of a Statue and ‘claiming’ your piece of the Peterborough Cathedral in return for a donation.

We are soon to embark on an exciting new fundraising project we have called Peterborough 900, to transform and develop key areas of the Cathedral’s life, work and ministry as we approach the 900th anniversary of the present building in 2018. In the Spring of 2011 we will launch our strategy for raising the estimated £10 million required to develop 3 core areas:

1) Our spirituality & worship with the completion of Nave Sanctuary furnishings and a much needed new sound system
2) Our education & outreach with the adaption of premises in the Precincts to include a new Visitor and Education Centre and enhanced retail and refreshment facilities
3) Our Music and Mission with the creation of a new Cathedral and Community Music Centre us to build on our expertise and then share this talent with the local community.

Further information on this mammoth 8 year project will be posted on this site nearer the time but in the meanwhile if you would like more information please call the Cathedral Office on 01733 355315 or email trust@peterborough-cathedral.org.uk.

General donations are also gratefully received and visitors will find a number of donation boxes inside the Cathedral itself. If however, you would like to get more involved with supporting Peterborough Cathedral financially both now and in years to come, please select an area of interest from the list below:
