Members of the Cathedral’s Music department are involved in a variety of outreach work in the Diocese and beyond, including training through church music and organ-based organizations.
The Cathedral often engages in work with local schools and has completed a successful Sing Up Scheme that attracted more than 150 local primary school children to take part. Both choristers and members of the Cathedral’s music team worked with the children over a number of months to develop their capabilities and the results of their hard work were then showcased in a grand finale concert attended by teachers and parents in July 2010.
In addition to working with schools, we have also launched the Peterborough Cathedral Music Association, designed to inspire musical excellence across the City by bringing more professional music-making into Peterborough. This Association will bring expert teaching and access to a range of music and singing groups as well as social events and discounted entry to certain Cathedral concerts and talks.
The Cathedral also annually hosts the Peterborough Diocesan Choral Festival, usually held on the second Saturday in October each year. Some 300-400 members of choirs from churches throughout the Diocese sing a Festival Evensong in the Cathedral at 6.00pm with the Cathedral Choir, preceded by regional rehearsals and a training day.
All Diocesan parish and benefice choirs are welcome to attend, and school and other choirs and local choirs from neighbouring Dioceses are also welcome to apply. The music is chosen to reflect the different make-up and abilities of choirs within the Diocese.
As well its wider Diocesan work, Peterborough Cathedral also welcomes the choral offering of various visiting choirs.
