Peterborough Cathedral is the visible focus and symbol of the ministry of the Bishop and Diocese of Peterborough.

The Diocese of Peterborough covers about 1200 square miles, including the whole of Northamptonshire, Rutland, and the Soke of Peterborough (the part of Peterborough north of the River Nene). This area is home to some 800,000 people and is one of 44 diocese in the Church of England with a working and thriving Christian base.

Despite popular opinion that religion is no longer important to many , the figures below suggest otherwise.

80% of the population goes into a place of worship (not only Christian or Anglican) each year, with over half the population attending a Christian service over the Christmas period. 60% believe that a place of worship makes their neighbourhood a better place to live, and in the Peterborough Diocese attendance has grown by 1% over the past two years, exactly matching the national trend.

While the Cathedral is the focus of Christianity across our diocese, there are 356 other parish churches working alongside us across the diocese.

The majority of Peterborough Cathedral’s work in the community is focused on Peterborough and the surrounding area, but there is a dedicated staff based on the Cathedral site responsible for work further afield.

This is the Diocesan Office located in the Bishop’s Palace grounds. The Diocesan Office can be contacted by calling 01733 887000 or visit their website at www.peterborough-diocese.org.uk if you have any queries about worship in the Peterborough Diocese, a neighbouring or Diocesan church.

Peterborough Cathedral is also a twinned with a church in our sister diocese in Bungoma, Kenya and as such we work with this church on a number of projects. For more information about outreach work further afield please click here.
