Summer Music Festival: Hauptwerk and the Cathedral organ

The Knights' Chamber (entrance via Cathedral Visitor Centre)
Saturday 10 June 2017 15:00 - 15:00

Ben Trenchard discusses and demonstrates Hauptwerk, the amazing pipe organ software used in the recent repitching.

Former Peterborough Cathedral chorister, Ben Trenchard, will introduce Hauptwerk, the leading virtual pipe organ software. Permission was granted to undertake the re-pitch of the Cathedral organ only on condition that a recording was made of every single note at its original pitch. Ben will show how it is possible, using this recording and Hauptwerk software, to create a virtual instrument on which to play ‘Peterborough Cathedral organ’ at its original pitch.

You can watch Ben talking how he invented a robot to help record every note of the organ:

This the second in a series of videos following the story of re-pitching Peterborough Cathedral's organ from Old Philharmonic to Standard pitch. This episode looks at the meticulous work involved in capturing the organ's original sound before a single pipe was removed. It was work that involved the creation of a specially designed robot!
